OVERVIEW

Platform engineering is described as ”...the discipline of designing and building toolchains and workflows that enable self-service capabilities for software engineering organizations in the cloud-native era.” [PlatformEngineering.Org, 2022]

At its most basic level, platform engineering seeks to remove obstacles that impact the delivery of value to production quickly and reliably.

Platform engineering teams plan, design, and manage cloud platforms so that they can be leveraged by software engineers, operations and others , allowing them to deploy and operate software in production in a safe, efficient, and reliable way.

Yet the reality for many organisations is that software engineers continue to struggle with manual procedures to get their code to production such as manually creating and configuring repositories, managing infrastructure components, and creating and managing CI/CD pipelines, from unit testing to production.

In this virtual Tech Talk, we will touch on the principles of platform engineering, how advanced platform engineering enables engineers to deliver value to production more efficiently, the role of the internal developer platform (IDP), and how Red Hat helps organisations to realise these important organisational goals.
