Getting started with Red Hat OpenShift for developers

September 29, 2022Annapolis Junction, MarylandMeadowgate Technologies

Who is this workshop best for?

This workshop is intended for people who are looking at moving to containers, or have just gotten started with Kubernetes, and want to learn the basics of using Red Hat® OpenShift® to make that move from monolithic applications to containers faster and to reduce the risks inherent in that change.

This workshop will introduce developers to the architecture and design of containerization and container platforms; provide understanding of the advantages and of using self-service features to create, maintain and deploy applications using modern tools.

Description

This workshop is intended to give you a hands-on introduction to using OpenShift from the perspective of a developer. For developers looking to kickstart their projects, OpenShift enables efficient application development through streamlined workflows and validated integrations. Developers will use the OpenShift command line client and web console to deploy an example project from source code hosted in github to a fully functional OpenShift environment.

A sample lab guide can be found here.

Topics which this workshop will cover include:

  • Deploying an application using a pre-existing container image.
  • Scaling up your application in order to handle web traffic.
  • Exposing your application to users outside of the cluster.
  • Viewing and working with logs generated by your application.
  • Accessing your application container and interacting with it.
  • Giving access to other users to collaborate on your application.
  • Deploying an application from source code in a Git repository.
  • Deploying a database from the OpenShift service catalog.
  • Configuring an application so it can access a database.
  • Configuring an automated application build based on OCP builds/pipelines.

Additional topics may also be covered relevant to the specific programming language used by the applications being deployed.  We will discuss additional workshops from here that go deeper into other OCP features that enable developers.

This workshop is Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), so please bring your own laptop. In addition to your device, a web browser is all that is needed.
