Refactoring for Application Modernization: Strategies, Practices and Patterns

Developing and deploying production-quality microservices is a good architectural direction for green-field development. But what if we have existing applications we want to modernize to take advantage of cloud-native development practices? Should we rewrite everything? Should we lift and shift and change just our CI/CD processes or strangle the monolith? How much should we refactor?

In this talk we will examine some strategies, practices and patterns for modernizing our applications and bringing the benefits of cloud-native development to our architectures without the risk of a complete rewrite.

Rob Sedor is a Red Hat Chief Architect with focus on Application Development. He has worked with Red Hat as a Middleware Solutions Architect, an Account Solutions Architect and a Cloud Architect. Rob has been a lead architect and developer on projects ranging from large distributed APIs, embedded and real-time solutions, to projects for tracking RFID tags in casino chips and acoustic gunshot detection. Rob works with Rust, Go and C++ doing systems programming and regularly works with Go, Python and Java/Camel doing cloud native development.
